Students In Saffron Scarves At Karnataka College Amid Row Over Hijab

Udupi, Karnataka: Amid protests in Karnataka of some Muslim girls being allowed to attend hijab classes, a group of students marched to their college wearing saffron scarves. Videos from Kundapur in Udupi district show boys and girls wearing scarves over their college uniform and chanting slogans such as "Jai Shri Ram (praise the Lord Ram)" while on their way to college. The protests have made headlines nationally and sparked political upheaval, with Congress and the BJP attacking each other over the issue.

In the video clip, Muslim students can be seen in a different line wearing handkerchiefs over their uniforms. A police car also appears to be parked near the college.

Police scattered protesters who were wearing the Saffron who were gathered near the appearance of the marketplace, showing videos.

Earlier videos from the coastal city of Kundapur showed Government Junior College students wearing handkerchiefs, arguing with their principal Ramakrishna GJ after they were denied entry to the institution.

College rules allow students to wear the hijab in class but not during classes, according to officials.

But Karnataka Interior Minister Araga Jnanendra said children should not "wear hijab or saffron scarves" at school.

"Schools are a place where children from all religions should study together and feel that we are no different, and we are all children of Bharat Mata," Mr Jnanendra told reporters.

"There are religious organizations that think differently, and I have asked the police to be vigilant. Those who disrupt or undermine national unity must confront them," he said.

In Karnataka owned by the BJP, this is the second such conflict after protests that began last month at PU Girls College in Udupi. Her students are still struggling to be allowed to sit in the classroom wearing the hijab.

Protests have made headlines nationwide with many questioning the move to ban girls from college. Politicians have also attacked each other for their stand on the issue.

At a ceremony in Saraswati Puja, Mr Gandhi, commenting on the decision of the college authorities not to allow the hijab in the classroom, wrote on Twitter "robbing the future of Indian girls".

"By allowing the hijab of students to get in the way of their education, we are robbing the future of Indian girls. Ma Saraswati gives information to all. She does not discriminate," said the Congress leader.
